TOC’s Signs Brochure

Oahu Signs Brochure

We’ve all seen signs that don’t look quite right. Most O‘ahu residents know that billboards are illegal in Hawai‘i and about Honolulu’s strict signage codes. But the laws are confusing and applying them even more so. The Outdoor Circle’s Signs Committee decided to help. The committee developed a brochure which attempts to decipher the ordinances so that most of us can more easily understand the rules. Link to the PDF file below and let us know if you have any questions. Better yet, if you see what you think may be an illegal sign don’t hesitate to report it to either the city or the state. Remember, you always must have an address where the sign is located and a detailed description of the sign in question. Oahu Signs Brochure

I recently drove by Ward Center and noticed the Seasonal Store has graphics on the storefront windows (applied to the outside like a bill board).  Is this allowed?  If it is not allowed how come the ‘City’ does not do anything about it?  Does the owner have connections at the City?

I am a resident of Hilo and am saddened and outraged at the proliferation of signs, especially along the ocean front street in downtown Hilo,  What can be done?

When is painting an unused building in the heart of town considered “art” or “grafitti”?  Parker Scholl students have painted two scenes on the storfornt building on Lindsey road.  One was in memory of 9/11 and the other for Martin Luther King Day.  I love that Parker Students are learning about history and have their own forms of expression,  but I see this “art” as grafitti.  I think it will only encourage “taggers” to want to deface other buildings with their “art”.  Does this not bother anyone else? Obviously the biulding owner has given permission to the school, but I think it is an eyesore.  Any thoughts?

why don’t you just let people use their property reasonably?  control freaks should mind your own business, you don’t own the islands!

Dear Susy,

If the owner of the building gave permission for the schoolchildren to paint a memorial to the victims of our nations most horrendous attack in history, it is not graffiti.  Just as if you painted your own house, and someone else didn’t like the color you chose, it would not be graffiti.  If you don’t like the painting on the building, buy the building yourself and paint over the 9/11 memorial yourself.
